"Elsewhere" is a piece I wrote for the 2026 Flash Fiction February challenge hosted by Storytelling Collective.

As it happened, inspiration came on day one. I can honestly say that the resulting story is not at all what I initially thought I'd write. It is, however, the story I needed to write. I'd put my brainstorming aside and was doing chores with the news on in the background when a few lines of this story landed in my consciousness. I stopped what I was doing, went to my computer, and wrote. This was just eight days after the murder of Alex Pretti.

My heart is broken and I'm full of rage, but I'm full of hope too. Thank you to everyone who doesn't look away from what's happening—everyone who continues to speak up, speak out, and care for strangers and friends alike in the face of mounting opposition.

We take care of us, and we will win.

Alt text on the zine is currently being wonky so for now, I've instead uploaded a plain-text Word file of the story. There's also a PDF for folks who'd like to have it in an easily printable, typical short story format.
